Description

HMS AUDACITY was the conversion of the captured German banana carrier, M.V. HANNOVER to the first, and rudimentary, escort carrier. Originally called an "auxilliary" carrier, she had no hangar or lifts, and carried an airwing of 6 Grumman MarletMk I fighters. She was torpedoed and sunk by U751 in December, 1941, but in ther short, and very successful career, demonstrated the viability of the escort carrier.
